FLAMMABLE MATERIALS USED IN CONSTRUCTION
Fire Safety Compliance is Not a Choice
The main purpose of building codes are to protect the public health, safety and welfare as they relate to the construction, occupancy of buildings and structures. Building codes place limits on flammable materials used within a structure. Building and fire codes vary by locality, i.e. state, city, or municipalities, occupancy loads, type of construction, specific use and contents. All of which fall under the individual State’s Life Safety Code. Fire Codes are directed at preventing fires and/or slowing the progression of fire, allowing occupants time to escape. Fire codes compliment the building codes. Flame Safe fire retardant products compliment both.
FLAME RETARDANTS FOR SPECIFIC USE
Building Code and  Fire Code Requirements
The authority having jurisdiction is responsible for enforcing building and fire codes. In all jurisdictions, fire codes require independent laboratory tests for each combustible material and it’s specific use. For instance in regard to fire retardant wood the ASTM E84, ASTM E2768, UL 723 ( Tunnel Test )  procedure conducted on 2" x 6“ southern yellow pine (SYP) lumber is specific to that species of lumber only.   Fire codes require each species to be tested separately. Similarly, according to Underwriters Laboratories, even if a fire test conducted on SYP lumber achieves a flame spread rating of less than 25, it does not mean it will achieve the same flame spread on different species of lumber. The  'EXCEPTION' being UL723 ( ASTM E84 , ASTM E2768 ) tests conducted on Douglas fir lumber covers all species of lumber.   Substrates such as plywood, OSB, or engineered wood products require a separate fire test. Flame Safe has all the required testing referenced above.
ONE FIRE TEST DOES NOT DO IT ALL
Fire Retardant Performance
Standardized test methods such as the ASTM E84, ASTM E2768 (UL 723. NFPA 255, UBC 42-1) for wood measure the performance of the fire retardant treatment for interior use. For exterior use, it must pass the ASTM E84 after the ASTM D2898, Accelerated Weathering Procedure. The measure of the performance of fire retardant treatments is not a single test method. One Test does not do it All. Different materials, substrates and uses require different test methods such as fire retardant roofing materials - ASTM E108, UL790, fire retardant for interior and exterior fabrics, tents & awnings  - NFPA 701,  FAR 25.853 and more. ASTM D2859 for carpeting, ASTM E1353 for upholstery, ASTM E84 for plastics, IMOR.A. 753 18 ASTM F1173.95 for Fire retardant PVC pipe, fiberglass composites, ASTM E84 for thatching, bamboo & other natural materials,  Fire retardant for fire mitigation and even Christmas trees - CAL ADMIN CODE, TITLE 19, PUBLIC SAFETY, SECTION 1254.3). All Flame Safe  products meet the test standards and it warrants it's products to perform as tested.
FIRE AND SMOKE DENSITY
Smoke and Fire Generation Characteristics
Building codes place limits on smoke generation that vary by state, city, municipalities, occupancy load, and type of structures Type 1, 2, 3, & 4 and the contents therein.  The ASTM E84, ASTM E2768, UL723, standard requires a smoke development index not to exceed 450 and in some instances 50 or less. The Test for Evaluating the Smoke Generation Characteristics of Solid Materials  ASTM E662,  NFPA 258 optical smoke density (Ds). It is important to note:  'smoke inhalation kills more people than fire'.  Flame Safe products have the lowest Optical Smoke Density in the industry, some as low as 5.
